News and Observer Advertising Director Sells Journalism to Pirates' Hook Staff PDF Print E-mail

Peter Tompkins (Graphic by Chris Alton)    The worst recession of group advertiser Peter Tompkins’ career is affecting business for not only his employer, the News and Observer, but the Pirates’ Hook as well.
Tompkins spoke to the Hook staff during the final exam in January. Zach Goldberg produced the accompanying video. Tompkins' Hook Video
“Advertising is content,” Tompkins said. Without advertising, readers will not buy the paper. If big businesses like Sears or Harris Teeter pull their weekly inserts in the paper, papers like the News and Observer lose subscriptions.
There is so much competition in advertising, between rates and markets reached, that big papers like the News and Observer are even competing with business partners.
The News and Observer stays alive by maintaining a quality paper, delivered to an informed community. The paper also offers a variety of vehicles online and through specialized print such as their free community papers.
Community papers cater to local businesses that lost the ability to advertise to such vast markets long ago.  “Our free community newspapers offer much more affordable ad space to local businesses rather than big chains,” Tompkins said.

Collection of Global Newspapers Completed PDF Print E-mail

Media specialists Kim Mayo and Margaret Harrison headed up a project to find out how people in other countries responded to President Obama's inauguration.
Mayo and Harrison gathered between 30 and 40 front pages from newspapers around the world that documented the inauguration of President Obama.   The newspapers are from places as far as Pakistan, and as close as right here in Durham.
It took about two weeks to gather enough front pages for the display across from the media center, but the papers are still coming.   "One from England is on its way," Mayo said.
Although Mayo and Harrison spearheaded the project, teachers around the school gathered most of the papers. "Teachers who know people or have family in other countries asked them to send front pages," Mayo said.  These teachers included World History teacher Kathie Davidson and English teachers Bryan Christopher and Jeffrey Lang.
Mayo and Harrison are proud of the display and happy with the outcome.  “A lot of people have stopped to look at it.  I think it is very interesting for both students and teachers to see,” Mayo said.
The display can be found upstairs across from the media center.

Library Bulks up on Senior Project Books PDF Print E-mail

In an effort to better equip students for their graduation projects, media coordinators Margaret Harrison and Dr. Kim Mayo have purchased a plethora of new books. “In the last few weeks, we have ordered around $6000 worth of books,” Harrison said.
The books cover topics from field-hockey to ghost hunting  that correspond with graduation project proposals as well as books on writing technique.  “Some of the books are on actual topics that students have proposed for their projects while others are books that will help students complete the project well,” Mayo said.
“I tried to purchase books on the topics I know we don't have much on,” Harrison said.
