Student News

After a rigorous nine weeks, all of the hard work and studying has paid off for hundreds of students. On Fri., Nov. 13, the quarterly honor roll breakfast, made possible by the PTA, celebrated almost 600 hundred students' academic accomplishments and rewarded them with muffins, croissants and cups of juice.
Almost a quarter of the school was released from class early and packed the cafeteria to enjoy the provided food while chatting amongst friends and classmates. See the video.
"Not only does it feel nice to know I've made good grades, but I never get to mingle with my friends anymore, so that's the best part to me," Student body president Keia Faison said.

From watching foreign films to enjoying french cuisine, the French club is off to a great start.
Last year, the French club was canceled early due to the lack of interested students. This year, the French club has already come up with a list of activities they are planning to do throughout the year to spark student interest.  "[The students] wanted to watch a French film so we're watching Jean de Florette," French Club sponsor Suzanne Coonley said. Coonley is also planning to bake a French cake for students to eat while they watch the movie.
Besides eating homemade cakes, the French club is also planning to celebrate some of the French holidays. "We are celebrating holidays like Three Kings Day [and] the 14th of July, which is France's Independence Day," Coonley said. The French club is also hoping to do some charity work. Students plan on raising money to buy an animal from the Heifer Project, an organization that supports families in developing countries.

Throughout the year students hope to make pen pals with students in France. "We are setting up an ePals account, which is a web based pen pals account," Coonley said. EPals is a program that allows students in classrooms across the globe to connect with each other by e-mail or blogs.
Coonley is also trying to plan a trip to France over the summer.  Although the trip is not definite, students would travel to Paris, Loire Valley, and Normandy to study French history and culture.
The club meets twice a month to experience lively French culture. To join contact Suzanne Coonley in room 137.

People of the World club members plan to bring out their inner child and help the community by participating in Halloween this year.
"We dress up, and trick or treat for cans," senior Dana Mustafa said. Improving the Durham community is just one of many goals the People of the World club reach for every year. To achieve this goal members will be asking for cans instead of candy on Halloween night in the Hardscrabble Plantation neighborhood. The club expects up to 200 lbs of can foods to match the previous years. The cans will be donated to food drives around Durham.
