Student News

After a rigorous nine weeks, all of the hard work and studying has paid off for hundreds of students. On Fri., Nov. 13, the quarterly honor roll breakfast, made possible by the PTA, celebrated almost 600 hundred students' academic accomplishments and rewarded them with muffins, croissants and cups of juice.
Almost a quarter of the school was released from class early and packed the cafeteria to enjoy the provided food while chatting amongst friends and classmates. See the video.
"Not only does it feel nice to know I've made good grades, but I never get to mingle with my friends anymore, so that's the best part to me," Student body president Keia Faison said.

The People of the World Club has taken the school by storm and already done activities this year, including a canned food drive which was the first big activity.  Now the club is embracing their worldliness and branching out to Latin America.  Thanks to Mrs. Margaret Harrison, in the next few weeks there will be even more activity at lunch time in the Media Center.
"The activities should be a lot of fun and we hope students are looking forward to them.  I sure am,"  Mrs. Harrison said.

The first activity will be a Mariachi band performing.  The activity will be led by Ms. Dionne Jimenez, a Spanish teacher here at Riverside.  The other activity will take place on October 30th also during all three lunches in the Media Center.  This is going to be Salsa dancing led by Ms. Angela Lewis, a former teacher of Riverside.  Students are allowed and encouraged to participate in both activities.
"I want to learn how to Salsa dance.  I'm definitely going to that," Sophomore Sophie Neff said.  Even though Neff is not a member of the club she, as well as anyone else who is interested is welcome to join in the dance and fun.

Upcoming Events

People of the World club members plan to bring out their inner child and help the community by participating in Halloween this year.
"We dress up, and trick or treat for cans," senior Dana Mustafa said. Improving the Durham community is just one of many goals the People of the World club reach for every year. To achieve this goal members will be asking for cans instead of candy on Halloween night in the Hardscrabble Plantation neighborhood. The club expects up to 200 lbs of can foods to match the previous years. The cans will be donated to food drives around Durham.
