Sierra Club is back
Monday, 12 October 2009

The Sierra Club is starting it's second year at Riverside, with Environmental Science teacher Krista Lee as teacher sponsor and senior Rachel Hoyme as president. The club's goal is to help the environment by recycling, picking up trash, and much more.
"This year we're focusing on better organization and I think we'll be successful in doing that. We've got a good president and we're going to make stuff happen," Lee said.
In it's first year the club participated in a state clean up where people from all over North Carolina went out and picked up trash. The group helped out by picking up trash along the highways, around the school, and in other parts of Durham.

SGA Proclaims Dance Success
Friday, 09 October 2009

SGA throws some dance moves   With all of the hype about Riversides Homecoming football game, it would seem that many students would forget about the dance all together, but that was not the case for the 2009 Homecoming Dance.

Students rushed to the ticket booth to purchase, for some their last, homecoming ticket. “At first it seemed as if no one was going to come to the dance because ticket sales were so slow,” Sophomore Olivia Williams said, “but as homecoming week progressed people began to rush to buy their ticket.”

At the end of the dance Student Government raised over $3,000  in profit from the dance thanks to all of the students that came.

Last Chance to Buy Letter Jacket
Wednesday, 07 October 2009

For some, a letterman jacket represents the golden years of a student's athletic career.
"A letterman jacket is just one of those things you want to have, it is a good thing to remember your high school sport by," said junior Caitlin McMannen.
It is important for athletes not to miss out on their chance to buy one. "I am so glad that I bought my letterman jacket, it is always cold inside Riverside. Also it is really warm and the best jacket I own," said junior Erich Hoffman.
The jacket comes in one standard model for both men and women. The jacket has a black wool body, black leather sleeves, with purple and white stripes on the collar and sleeve cuffs. The jacket comes with the Pirates' letter already placed and the back reads Pirates in purple letters.
However, the ability to purchase a letterman jacket has a few requirements. Athletes must receive varsity status in their respective sport or meet coach criteria for lettering.
Those interested in purchasing a letterman jacket should visit room 167, Coach Hackney, with $135.00 by Thurs., Oct. 8.

Ducks race for Cystic Fibrosis
Wednesday, 07 October 2009

Every fall 1,000 ducks fill the Eno River for charity. The 10th annual Duck-a-thon is being held Sat., Oct. 17 at 11 am.
The National Honor Society (NHS) sponsors this event by selling tickets that cost three dollars.  These tickets initially buy a rubber duck that is entered in a race down the Eno River. The first few ducks that cross the finish line win a prize.
"I've entered into the Duck-a-thon every year and now that I am a National Honor Society member I am getting to see the 'behind the scenes' student involvement, and I am proud to be a part of this charity," senior Caroline McSwain said.

Soccer continues Wildcat domination
Wednesday, 07 October 2009

The men's soccer team followed up a successful homecoming weekend with their own victory over East Chapel Hill on Monday night. The Pirates won 2-0 at East in a pivitol Pac-6 game.
The Pirates now have a secure hold on second place in the conference right behind Jordan. "We're all pumped up from our win at East, so we're looking forward to our last games and hopefully a great tournament," senior Joe Weitz said.
Until fairly late in the second half the game was tied 0-0, but juniors Gabe Rivera and Zabarle Kollie secured the win with a goal each.
