Prom solved
Thursday, 14 May 2009

With question marks plastered across the school, anticipation for this year's prom theme was high, and many were not disappointed.
“The theme was the board game 'Clue' and it worked out really well and was overall extremely fun. I think most people enjoyed it and even the teachers thought it was a fresh idea,” junior and prom committee member Melissa English said.
The theme was revealed to the attendees as they walked through iron gates, like those at the entrance of the Clue mansion, and took in the decorations replicating the rooms on the board game and Riverside teachers dressed as the characters. Students were able to walk around the hall and attempt to solve the mystery of “Finding The Secret Room” using clues from their invitations.
“The theme was really fun. All the posters had me waiting and I was definitley surprised in a good way when we arrived. Me and my date actually went around to each station and played the game, so we had a really good time and I think everyone else thought it was a lot of fun,” senior Prom King Kenneth Brooks said.
Winnners of the prom court were announced at 10:30 that night with Brooks as king and senior Elena Korn as prom queen.

Honor students set new record
Thursday, 14 May 2009

The annual Honor Roll Ice Cream Social was held Thurs., Apr. 23, from 2:00 – 2:30. Students with all A's and B's or a 90% or above average were invited to the social.
682 students piled into the cafeteria to eat the treats provided by the PTSA. Principal Jim Key could not have been happier with the number of students who made the honor roll this quarter. “We set a new record,” Key said. “I will brag about it to anyone who will listen.”
Students were excited for the popsicles and ice cream sandwiches instead of the usual honor roll breakfast. “I liked the ice cream social better than the breakfast,” sophomore Olivia Van Horn said. Van Horn has been on the honor roll every semester her ninth and tenth grade years. “I work hard to get good grades so I can go to a good college, but the ice cream is a nice bonus,” Van Horn said.

MIT for free
Thursday, 14 May 2009

While some seniors are working extra shifts at Chick-fil-a to scrap up college funds, senior Phillip Daniel is letting his academic accomplishments do the work for him.
Daniel has been awarded the Gates Scholarship to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The scholarship will pay for his tuition until he receives his PhD. “It feels great to get the scholarship. It's fantastic,” Daniel said.
Danie's' impressive application, and his his outstanding academic achievements, are what earned him this esteemed scholarship. “I wrote eight essays, listed my volunteer work, and said how I spend my free time,” Daniel said. The hard work he put into the application obviously paid off.
Daniel is one of only 1000 students nationwide to receive the prestigious scholarship, and people who know him know he has earned it.

Saturday Academy Offers Extra Opportunity
Wednesday, 13 May 2009

Saturday Academy Movie   As exams draw closer and students begin to review for their finals, Saturday Academy provides a quiet study environment with tutors.
"Saturday Academy is a great opportunity for any student to learn and it gives them a chance to excel," assistant coordinator Janice Giles said.
As seen in a new video by Josh King, the program is open from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. every Saturday morning, volunteers from the National Honor Society and select Riverside teachers offer their time to help students with their work.
"I went to Saturday Academy earlier this year and it really helped me concentrate to get my work done," sophomore Nathan Rumer said.
National Honor Society members also benefit from Saturday Academy as they gain valuable volunteer hours. "We are required to attend two Saturday Academy's per year to uphold our membership," senior National Honor Society member Alice Osteen said.
